A silicone oil is any liquid polymerized siloxane with organic side chains. The most important member is polydimethylsiloxane. These polymers are of commercial interest because of their relatively high thermal stability, lubricating, and dielectric properties. Silicone oils are important tools in vitreoretinal surgery because they can displace aqueous humour from the retinal surface, maintaining the adhesion between retina and retinal pigment epithelium. To understand this capability, it is important to know the silicone oil characteristics. Herein, we report first on the main chemical-physical proprieties and then we review the clinical applications of the current silicone oil which is lighter than water with reference to their indications with small gauge vitrectomy. Finally, we describe the surgical techniques to inject and remove this type of silicone oil. In the summary of this paper, we explain why silicone oils are today increasingly used and why their introduction has improved the prognosis of several retinal diseases. In fact, having different types of silicone oils allows us to choose the appropriate endotamponade for every single case.

Applications:
 Silicone oil is used as a substitute for the vitreous fluid of the eye during many eye operations and treatments because no other substance matches the purity of this oil.
Most of the anti-flatulent medicines contain this oil. It reduces the immoderately formed gas in the human digestive system.
 It is used in ointments and skin creams. As silicone oil is a water repellent, it prevents the skin from drying by forming a protective layer across the skin, but it does allows the skin to breathe.
Silicone oil-based pharmaceutical creams due to their transcutaneous permeability, are effective for providing relief against burns, dermatitis, and also provides anti-clotting benefits.
Medical instruments are known to be lubricated by silicone oil.
In the automotive industry, silicone oil was initially used for cooling fan clutch assemblies
 It has been used as a lubricant in woodworking and construction.
While deep-frying foods in hotel, cooks often add small quantity of silicone oil to their cooking oil to prevent the latter from foaming and splattering. But never substitute silicone oil entirely as this can prove to be toxic.

It acts as a good mold release for plastics and rubber components during their manufacture.
It is used as a hydraulic oil in aircraft as it has anti-shear properties.

The refrigerants added in freezing machines also contain silicone oil.
 Silicone oil is used in clays and silly putty.
Textiles require a smooth finishing, and therefore, silicone oil is used in provide required softness.
